Job Opportunities

Veterinarian Position Available

When new staff come to work for us; after they have been with Phoenix for a few weeks, they all say the same thing, “Gosh you were telling the truth when you said everyone here gets on with each other, I’ve never worked anywhere like this before!” No cliques, no backstabbing, no bossy hierarchy. We are genuinely one big happy family. Yes, there is a ‘Mum’ and a ‘Dad’, yes, there is a ‘quite one’, a ‘noisy one’ and a ‘quirky one’. We celebrate diversity and are supportive of each other every day. We are kind to each other, and that goes miles in making everyone’s day more rewarding.

Our extended family is about to grow as Jen will soon be going on maternity leave. However, this position could easily turn into a permanent role for the right person. We are looking for a veterinarian with experience, but this is not a deal breaker, as we are equipped to support a new or recent graduate. More important is someone who wants to invest in themselves and their development, helping us continue to build a practice at the cutting edge of Veterinary Care.

We are a proudly independent companion animal practice, established nearly 5 years ago, offering a range of referral and specialist services, as well as first opinion general practice. We are offering a full-time or part-time role with days to suit you. We are fortunate to be able to accommodate individual needs, offering flexibility as required. If you are ambitious, with a desire to grow professionally – we can definitely help you achieve that.

If you are looking for plenty of surgical work or looking to develop your surgical skills further – we will encourage that as we have a high surgical case load, and a wealth of surgical experience to learn from.

If full clinical autonomy is important to you– we ensure you will see cases from beginning to end, we think this is vital for vet fulfillment, client satisfaction and clinical outcomes.

We are a dynamic team of veterinary professionals, from, experienced vets, to an amazing network of veterinary nurses; here is a team that is at the top of its game. We all pursue special interests; for example one vet is an ace at advanced imaging, one is our repro expert, another is an orthopaedic specialist, so we all work together to share our skills, notes, and have case discussions, with the goal of achieving the best possible results. We hold our wellbeing and practice values in high regard and we have a ‘morning rounds’ meeting every day, so we are all on the same page.

When it comes to weekends and out of hours, the rota will be based on 1 weekend in 5, all weekends are supported by a wonderfully skilled vet nurse.

This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated veterinary surgeon to explore, develop and grow, live in the Bay of Islands, and experience all that this beautiful area has to offer.

Don’t just take our word for it, read about what the team has to say and about working at our practice:

“From day 1, I felt like I belonged at Phoenix. The team were so welcoming and warm. There is a lot of value placed on mental health and work life balance, which is so important in an industry with such high rates of burnout. I love my new work family.” Toni, veterinary nurse

“I’ve spent years looking for a great boss to work for, multiple practices later, I feel like I’ve finally found that. Paula and her whole team are such a supportive, positive and dedicated group. I couldn’t wish for a better place to work.” Jen, Veterinarian.

“As someone coming from overseas and as a new graduate, I have felt welcomed at Phoenix by both the team and our clients from my very first day! I love that I can follow most of my cases through, allowing me to build a genuine connection with clients and patients, plus, the diverse caseload and facilities available have allowed me to develop my skills rapidly. If I had to pick, my favourite part of coming to work everyday is the team - we have fun no matter what we are doing and I can’t think of a better boss and management team to work alongside!’ Rose, veterinarian

“To start with here’s some strong pointers: If you’re looking for a clinic with a high surgical case load, this is it. You’ll become a whizz at surgery and get all the support you need, and the clients are genuinely lovely and grateful. But what I really think make or breaks our tough job in clinical practice is the team we work with. Life’s too short not to enjoy where we work. Phoenix has an amazing team; every single person here will help each other out and it makes work fun. If this sounds great, it’s actually better because my words aren’t wording today!” Ju, Veterinarian

“The thing I love most about working at Phoenix is our team. We love to have a laugh, everyone has their quirks, and there is no judgement. Phoenix is a place where you can feel comfortable, supported and accepted.” Darian veterinary nurse.

“Thank you again for letting me work with you guys I’ve learned so much and gained so much confidence and it’s all because you took a chance on me and let me stay despite my antics and inexperience. The team really is like a family at this point and I’m so grateful for it. You had better not get sick of me because I’ll be back.” Cailin vet student and holiday vet nurse.

The Bay of Islands is a beautiful location in the sub-tropical far north of New Zealand. The area offers quiet beaches, heaps of watersports and fishing, as well as tramping, horse riding, and all the other outdoor activities you would expect from an area of unspoiled natural beauty. For the less outdoorsy it offers great wineries, cafes, art galleries, and culture. For gardeners it is a heaven, grow tomatoes in the winter, tropical fruit in the spring, capsicums and egg plants all summer, then watch guavas go crazy every autumn. We are well connected to Auckland with Air NZ and Barrier Air flying into Kerikeri 7 times a day or it is a 3 and a half hour drive.

The practice prides itself on offering exceptional standards of care and skills and services not available elsewhere in the area. Phoenix Animal Wellness has now grown to be the most highly considered companion animal veterinary clinic in the Far North, and as we continue to grow, this role can develop as our practice evolves, including opportunities for a leadership role.

The current team is made up of 5 vets, all pursuing their own interests and passions, and developing new services for the clinic, fully supported by a kind, caring and extremely competent team of veterinary nurses, who also pursue their own special interests. Our head nurse runs pet first aid courses and is Penn Hip certified, we have an avian nurse guru and a nutrition nurse too.

The practice offers Referral Orthopaedics, Advanced reproduction work including TCI, Hip & Elbow scoring, BOAS Respiratory Grading and surgery, endoscopy and other referral soft tissue surgeries to name a few.

We have large, modern, spacious premises, next to a nature reserve. We boast a large waiting room with separate dog and cat waiting areas, huge prep room, dedicated dental area with dental Xray and 2 surgical suites. There is even a bedroom for a power nap.

In terms of equipment within the practice, you will find everything you expect in a modern clinic, plus fantastic extras such as Imagyst, ECG, Tonometer, Cryopen, Nebuliser, SignalPet and Phovia.
